This type of cats are called Maneki-neko(beckoning cat) which have one paw raised to beckon them inside. They are known as a popular ornament of lucky charm in Japan.
They are considered to invite people and fortune into the place where Maneki-neko is displayed. (Normally, their size is much smaller than the picture above though..hehehe)
If you find them somewhere, you should check which paw Maneki-neko raise.
Because it is said that the one with its right paw raised invites money and the one with its left paw raised invites people.

If you love cats, I would recommend you to visit this temple”Gotoku-ji” located in setagaya-ku in Tokyo. At the corner of the temple, you will see countless cats over there.

They are dedicated here after they make someone’s wish come true. They are, so to speak, retired cats.
